I particularly like the House Sitting idea It is a great way of travelling cheap, visiting new places while enjoying home comforts at the same time. Having accommodation paid for can make all the difference between affording to travel and not.

We are longterm travelers, backpackers, to be more precise. And we have been traveling for over two years together around South America.
Because of what we do and how we live, we completely agree with you. You don’t have to be rich to travel!
My partner started his journey in Mexico and came all the way to Brazil, with a budget that consisted of less than 5.000 euro. I was even bolder! I left home with 500 dollars in my pocket and have been on the road for almost 5 years now.
We use a combination of all the tips you mentioned to support our journey. In fact, my first job abroad was on a cruise ship, and when I returned home and left to travel the world with just my backpack, I found jobs as a bartender and waitress.
We have been volunteering a lot in hostels as well, and sometimes, even got paid jobs. When we have to pay for accommodation, we always choose hostels and stay in large dorms.
We also used a lot of apps like the ones you mentioned. Blablacar is one of our favorites! But we also hitchhike a lot when possible.
Recently we started working from home. We haven’t tried Upwork or Craigslist, so I don’t know how they work. But we started on Fiverr and it’s a great way to start selling your services.
We think you’ve done a great job encouraging people to follow their dreams. Hopefully, everyone that reads this will realize that traveling doesn’t take a lot of money.
We love reading your articles. Thank you for the great advice.

Most of the people around me think that flashy hotels and expensive flights are the only way to travel and yet I use to holiday all the time and get comments like “I robbed a bank” or something. Thanks so much for sharing this, a couple of things I can look into to help me even further 🙂

I am Australian and have travelled extensively. Australia is a great country and is also very budget traveller friendly with many backpacker hostels, etc. However, it is also a very expensive country. You may find that you can get better value from another destination. That being said our exchange rate is low and getting lower at the moment. So this may help.

Not everyone has the knowledge or is responsible enough to use credit wisely.

Having said that I agree to some ideas of yours of getting short term jobs where you visit. That can cover some of your expenses as well. Nice post
